Dempsey's Shine In Spain
Eighteen year old Keith Dempsey and younger brother Peter (15) set blistering times at the Guadix circuit in Spain last week when Keith tested with Championship winning team Motorworld and Peter tested with his Dad's team Cliff Dempsey Racing.
Keith, who was on a working week with CDR, got the chance to test with Motorworld on Thursday afternoon and set the second quickest time of the week at that point, having only done 30 laps due to a fuel pump problem. The race-winning driver impressed the team with his feed back and maturity so much so they asked him to test again on Saturday morning. On Saturday Keith set a blistering pace when he set the fastest time of the day at 1.17.45, the second quickest time of the week on old tyres, (the quickest time being 1.17.39). He came in put on a new set of tyres hoping to be the first driver to dip into the 1.16's but with a slight tyre problem he struggled to equal his best time. The Ashbourne driver although disappointed not to have gone quicker on his new rubber was satisfied with his second quickest time of the week having only completed two half days testing.
While big brother Keith was setting quickest times his younger brother Peter (15) was having his first proper test in a racing car. His instructor was no less than British Formula Renault Champion Carl Breeze. Having taking the 15 year old around the circuit in a road car to show him the lines and breaking points, Peter took to the track on Thursday afternoon. He amazed everyone with his pace and maturity so much so that the Track Manager Ian Forester said that some of the mature drivers could learn from the 15-year-old. Peter got down to an amazing 1.19.4 on his first half day's testing at the circuit only 1.7 seconds away from the quickest time of the week at that stage.
During that evening over dinner Carl Breeze made a bet with Peter that if he did a 1.18 second lap at all he would change his hair colour to red for a day and if he did not Peter had to dye his hair blue for a day. Also the Michelin personnel said they would give the 15-year-old £50 if he did a 1.18 lap. Friday morning Peter started his testing and in two short runs got down to a 1.19.1 but was struggling to break into 1.18's. He came in and made a change to the front wing and said to his father Cliff "I know where I am loosing the time I will do a 1.18 this time" and sure enough the he did - 1.18.7 just 1.3 of a second off the quickest time of the week and also means Carl Breeze has to dye his hair red for a day and Peter is £50 richer!!
Team owner Cliff Dempsey said "I am very pleased with the time Keith has done with Motorworld it proves he will be a contender for the Championship next year. I am amazed with what Peter has achieved at such a young age, to drive one of these cars that well in your first racing car test is unbelievable, Carl has done a great job with instructing him, it just creates another problem what to do with Peter next year?"
