Dempsey A Measley Ninth At Knockhill
Irish Formula Europa Champion Keith Dempsey finished ninth in the Formula Renault race at Knockhill in Scotland while suffering from the measles.
The 17-year-old switched from the European championship to the British and has had his highest finish in the Formula so far.
Keith in his KTK Sand and Gravel, Irish Ferries, Richmond Recruitment, Formula Renault had a difficult qualifying with changing conditions, starting wet and drying out, but the young Ashbourne driver did an excellent job qualifying 10th, less than .1 of a second behind British Championship leader Carl Breeze. At one point the 17-year-old was in 6 but 3 drivers changed to slick tyres and he got piped on the last lap.
At the start of the Race Keith made an excellent start and moved his Richmond Recruitment sponsored car into 8th place at the first corner, passing British Championship leader Carl Breeze and at the end of the first lap passed Mark Mc Loughlin for 7th but the red flags came out after an accident at the back of the field and the Race was stopped.
On the restart Keith did not get as good a start and only made up one place and ran in 9th place until lap 12 when he made a mistake at the hairpin and was passed. He was running in a steady 10th when the race leader fell off the road moving him up top 9th again.
Considering this was Keith's first race in the British Championship and also Cliff Dempsey Racing's first year running in Formula Renault it is a good result to start with.
Cliff Dempsey said " We are very satisfied with the result but we have to build on this. We are delighted to be racing in the British Championship as this is where we have always wanted to race since 1990 and we look forward to competing in this Championship next year."
