Formula E: ABT extends contract with Lucas di Grassi

Team Boss Hans-Jürgen Abt and the 30-year old Brazilian signed the contract immediately before the Formula E event in Monaco.

ABT Sportsline has extended the contract with Lucas di Grassi ahead of time. The current FIA Formula E championship leader will continue to compete for the only German team in the race series for purely electric powered single-seater racecars in the future.

Team Boss Hans-Jürgen Abt and the 30-year old Brazilian signed the contract immediately before the Formula E event in Monaco, which opens the European season on Saturday. Lucas di Grassi mounted the Formula E podium four times in the first six races and heads the overall standings. In September 2014, he wrote a small piece of motorsport history by winning the dramatic championship opener in Beijing.

“I’m delighted and also quite proud that Lucas will be part of our team in the future,” says Hans-Jürgen Abt and reveals: “We both knew what we wanted and reached an agreement immediately. The negotiations didn’t even take thirty minutes before we shook hands.” In February 2014, ABT Sportsline was the first team to announce its driver line-up of Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt. “Lucas is one of the absolute top drivers in Formula E. Of course, we know that he is hot property because of his strengths on and off the track. With this in mind, we wanted to close this issue as fast as possible.”

“I’ve got to know and appreciate the ABT Sportsline team over the last few months. I didn’t hesitate for a second when it came to extending the contract,” says Lucas di Grassi. “We’ve been through a lot in the time we’ve spent together. Success as well as small setbacks, which just brought us even closer. The team and I have ambitious targets in Formula E and I’m convinced that we will reach them together.” Lucas di Grassi contests the FIA World Endurance Championship WEC, including its season highlight at Le Mans, as an Audi factory driver. He received approval from Audi Sport for his program in Formula E.

Signing the contract comes at the perfect time: Formula E starts in Monaco, Lucas di Grassi’s adopted home, on Saturday. “It goes without saying that this race is a special highlight for me,” says the Brazilian. “I’m pleased that the future is sorted out and we can concentrate solely on the weekend. Our goal is to arrive at our team’s home race in Berlin as championship leader.”

The seventh race of the season around the streets of the principality starts on Saturday at 16:00.
