Watkins Glen, NY (October 1, 1999) - There were no surprises today on the 3.4-mile road circuit at Watkins Glen as the Chrysler Viper Team Oreca cars topped the time charts in practice for Sunday's Round Nine of the FIA GT Championship.
The No. 1 Viper of David Donohue and Jean-Philippe Belloc set the fastest lap of the day at 1:48.422 and 112.89 mph by trimming a second and a half off their morning time. Oreca teammates Karl Wendlinger and Olivier Beretta set the fastest time in the morning session with a lap at 1:48.642.
Rounding out the top five overall were:
Wolfgang Kaufmann/Bob Wollek Porsche 911 GT2 1:50.407 Vincent Vosse/Xavier Pompidou/Michel Ligonnet Chrysler Viper GTS-R 1:51.050 Christian Glasel/Christian Vann Chrysler Viper GTS-R 1:51.089
Mark Knepper was uninjured when his SSZ Stradales left the circuit at turn one. The car hit the barrier causing damage to both the front and rear of the car. "I was just going a little too fast," Knepper said. "I drove off the topside and slid into the pea gravel and hit the wall with the driver's side door."
Jeff Simmons led the way in practice and qualifying for the Barber Dodge Series. Simmons' best lap of the day was timed at 1:51.531, which would have placed him eighth on the provisional FIA GT grid. "It was a pretty good lap, all the way around the track," Simmons said. "I couldn't have gone much faster."
Bob Wollek, four-time winner of the Rolex 24 at Daytona is entered in the Freisinger Racing No. 15 Porsche 911 GT2 this weekend. The No. 15 Porsche was third fastest overall today.
Fans will be treated to a special autograph session on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Scheduled to sign autographs under the tent in the Oktoberfest Family Fun Zone are Olivier Berreta, Karl Wendlinger, David Donohue, Jean-Philippe Belloc and Bob Wollek.
