EUROSPORT SUPER RACING WEEKENDT
ROUND 5 : ZOLDER (BEL), 18th/20th MAY 2001
Less than a week after the Silverstone round, the competitors will travel to the Belgian circuit of Zolder for the fifth round of the Eurosport Super Racing Weekends. The circuit is located 75 km east of Brussels, in the province of Limburg. Inaugurated on July 19th, 1963, the circuit hosted ten Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix between 1973 and 1984.
The circuit is currently undergoing a lot of work. "They have made many improvements at Zolder since last year, mainly for security reasons", Michel Neugarten said. "The track is more technical, somewhere between Brno and Budapest. The only problem can be the wind, which can blow the sandy local soil over the track, and change the grip very quickly. You've got to be careful". Wim Daems driving the n 21 GL PK Chrysler Viper GTS-R is looking forward to the race : "Zolder is my home track and I know it well ; so it will give us a big advantage. All the other tracks have been new for us, so we hope to gain some time at Zolder. I'm really looking forward to it, although the circuit is not one of my favourites. It is too slow and technical. But as all the other tracks are new to us, and the car is new to us and the race engineers, it normally takes us a while to learn."
Among the FIA European Touring Car Championship teams, Dutch team Carly Motorsport - running three BMWs in the Super Production Championship - is based close to Zolder, and two of its drivers, Peggen Anderson and Frederic Bouvy, are really looking forward to the Belgian round : "I did not know most of the tracks we have visited so far, but I know Zolder very well," Andersson said. "I raced there many times in the European, German and Belgian Touring Car Championships, while most of the other drivers have never been there. That is why I am very confident and I want to achieve a great result." Frederic Bouvy is the only Belgian driver in the series. After his first appearance at Silverstone, where he showed his abilities at the wheel of the third Carly car, Bouvy is considered one of the favourites for his home race. "I will be aiming for the first positions, but even if I know the track, it won't be so easy," Bouvy admitted. "The level of the Championship is so good that the guys at the top are professionals and really quick. I will try to keep pace with them, but I do not want to deceive my fans. Indeed my goal is just to prove that I can be competitive in such a series, so that, together with BMW Belgium, we may plan a proper campaign for next season." <pre> GT on TV : Eurosport Super Racing Weekend Saturday, 19th May 2001 18:00 - 19:00 : Qualifying delayed Sunday, 20th May 2001 17:00 - 19:00 : Races delayed
