MacNeil scores Podium at Lime Rock Park
Cooper MacNeil resumed his charge for North American Ferrari Challenge glory at Lime Rock Park. (July 29-30) This marked a return to Lime Rock for MacNeil and he would waste little time acclimating his WeatherTech Ferrari 458 to the twisty and fast circuit. Only two days of action meant he and his Ferrari of Houston team would have to make quick work getting the set-up spot on for the event.
As is typical in Ferrari Challenge there would be a double race occupying Saturday’s activities at the Connecticut bullring racetrack. Qualifying on Friday, put Cooper fifth place for race one, with the field separated by the smallest of margins at the sharp end of the grid.
In race one, MacNeil would have slight contact with another driver running Cooper off the circuit in the fast turn one area. MacNeil would return to action, but with a huge distance to gain on his next closest competitor and the podium. Under green flag conditions, MacNeil ran blisteringly fast laps setting the track record for Ferrari Challenge race cars at Lime Rock, however as he was pressuring the leaders, he would have a left front tire lose air, and he would have to pit. MacNeil dropped to 11th in the running order where he would later finish.
Race two, MacNeil qualified third for the second race of the day. When the green waved, Cooper wasted little time gaining a position on the track and would cruise to another podium, finishing second, bringing his season podium total to an impressive eight top three finishes for the season.
“The WeatherTech/Ferrari of Houston 458 Challenge car was fast again this weekend and I think we proved we had the speed to be the car to beat here at Lime Rock,” MacNeil said. “It just goes to show how close the competition is here in this series and how everything has to be perfect in order to win in this tough series.”
The championship chase will come down to the last event at Homestead-Miami Speedway in late September where MacNeil is still very much alive in the chase for the championship, as two races remain.
