THOMAS HYLKEMA FIGHTS ON IN FORMULA BMW WORLD FINAL!
During the Formula BMW World Final at the Valencia circuit in Spain Thomas Hylkema showed his combativeness today. Starting from a 23rd place on the grid he was able to overtake a lot of opponents in a blink of an eye. The Dutchman eventually finished the race in sixteenth place after 22 laps.
RACE 03: In the third and final heat before the Formula BMW World Final Hylkema did not have the best start this morning. He fought his way back into the race quickly however by retaking the lost positions in the opening lap. Hylkema then tried to pass Jazeman Jaafar, but hit the car of Jack Lemvard who was just ahead of him. In the collision with his team-mate Hylkema damaged his front wing. On the long straights on the 3.100 metres long circuit Hylkema was able to keep up with the midfield, but he lost a lot of downforce in the fast turns. In the end he had to put up with the sixteenth place. With a total of 37 points (tenth, eleventh and sixteenth place in the heats on Saturday and Sunday) he started the finale in 23rd place.
FINAL RACE: After studying the data and meeting with the team about his mediocre starts, Hylkema decided how to approach the decisive Formula BMW World Final. The 19-years old driver succeeded in his plans and got away really well. Within a couple of laps he was able to pass some opponents and he was able to get rid of the packed midfield. Together with Japanese driver Kimiya Sato he was on his way to the front. After having used the best of his tyres, Hylkema was forced to defend his position fiercely. He was however unable to prevent Sato from getting away. In the final phase of the race British driver Matthew Bell also passed him. Despite losing some terrain, Hylkema was able to take his car over the finish line in sixteenth place. With this result he left a number of more experienced and competitive drivers behind him!
THOMAS HYLKEMA: "I am really satisfied about this weekend. On Saturday things went really well and I was able to measure myself with the front runners in the championship for the first time. The Formula BMW World Final really is a top event. You will make a lot of mileage and you will fight against the best Formula BMW drivers of the world. We were all racing on the edge. The result and progress I made gives a lot of confidence for the future. Finally I would like to thank my sponsors and of course the AM-Holzer Motorsport team. We have grown to each other quickly and cooperated well as a team. Absolutely superb!"
