Hinchcliffe scores his fourth pole of season
Denver, Colo. - Aug. 14, 2004 -- James Hinchcliffe (AIM Autosport) continued to make his run at the 2004 Formula BMW USA Championship as he scored his fourth pole of the season today. On lap 15 of the Round 12 qualifying session he set a new qualifying record time of 1:15.069 minutes around the 1.657-mile temporary street circuit. Hinchcliffe leads the Rookie points and stands third in the Championship points. Championship points leader and Round 11 polesitter Andreas Wirth will start second (1:15.304). Matt Jaskol will start third (1:15.368).
Seven drivers set times in the 1:15 minute bracket this morning as the young Formula BMW USA drivers gained confidence on the tight street course.
The quickest Rookies in the field were Hinchcliffe (P1), Graham Rahal (P4) and Tom Milner (P6).
"Tomorrow I will look to gain as many points on Andreas in the overall Championship and maintain my lead in the Rookie Championship," said Hinchcliffe. "Consistency will win the Championship and I need to consistently finish in front keeping my chances their best."
Consistency has kept Wirth in the Championship points lead from Round 1 and he will look to maintain that in Rounds 11 and 12. "A good start will be very important here. If you lose the inside line you can lose quite a number of places. If I win the start I think I can hold the lead because my car is so good this weekend."
Jaskol said, "Third may be a good place to start. I will learn more in today's Round 11 race where I start second, but with the width of Turns 1 and 2 means the there is a lot of room to race. James, Andreas and I are all within .300 seconds so it will be a close race."
The Round 12 race will start at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 15th. <pre> Qualifying: Round 12 1. James Hinchcliffe (R) (AIM Autosport) 1:15.069 (79.463 mph) 2.
