Alexander Rossi On The Podium First Time Out
Highly rated teen driver impresses in opening round of Formula BMWUSA
Miller Motorsports Park, UT -- He has already won a championship, he has already won national class races, and he's only 15 years old. But such has been the meteoric nature of Alexander Rossi's brief career to-date, that much was expected from him in the opening round of the 2007 Formula BMWUSA championship.
If such a weighty burden was affecting him it didn't show as he put in a combative drive during which he made a bold passing maneuver and soaked up relentless pressure from behind.
Quiet and contemplative before the race, Rossi exploded away from the grid at the tail of the leading four-car train. Sensing his moment on the opening lap, the Californian driver lunged down the inside of Tooele Turn when those ahead banged wheels and he scraped past the pole-sitter to slot into third position.
Thereafter Rossi drove brilliantly; while being forced to defend his position from repeated attacks, he still managed to maintain a race-long challenge of his own on the driver in second place, despite the distractions in his mirrors.
Lap after lap Alexander drew up to the rear wing of his opponent, but there just wasn't the room to make a move. With only a few laps to go, Rossi's plans were thwarted by two deployments of the safety car; the second of which resulting in the race ending under yellow.
Nevertheless, Rossi was ecstatic to come home in third place and score a podium on his first FBMW outing -- and rightly so. "It's awesome," he said, "I'm really looking forward to round two tomorrow and it's definitely going to be a show."
