Haryanto takes over championship lead with third win.
Sentul, Indonesia -Rio Haryanto (16/Questnet Team Qi-Meritus) took his third win of the weekend and now leads the overall Formula BMW Pacific Drivers Classification as the Indonesian delighted home supporters at the Sentul International Circuit. Second on the podium is Rookie Cup leader Gary Thompson (IRL/17/E-Rain Racing), while Formula BMW Pacific Junior Axcil Jefferies (ZIM/15/Eurasia Motorsport) finished third.
Haryanto has now won four races in a row, including three at the 3.960 km circuit located outside of Jakarta. Haryanto now leads previous Drivers Classification leader Thompson by four points, with Jefferies a further 17 points adrift.
>From pole position, Haryanto and second-place Fahmi Ilyas (MAS/17/E-Rain Racing) had a slight coming together in Lap 1, allowing Thompson to slip by the two and move into the lead. However, Haryanto re-gained the lead on the first turn of Lap 5 after a slight coming together between him and Thompson. Haryanto then finished the job with a 3.577 second lead over second place.
Jefferies, who has reached his second podium of the weekend, started from fourth on the grid and in the early laps of the race, fell a few places back. However, he worked his way up and mid-way through the 15-lap race overtook Akhil Khushlani (IND/19/E-Rain Racing) for fourth and then moved into the final podium position after Ilyas struggled on Lap 11.
Formula BMW Junior Chris Wootton (AUS/20/Eurasia Motorsport) started Round 9 from 10th on the grid, but finished three places better in seventh. The runner-up in the 2008 Rookie Cup will look to further improve his position in Round 10, the final race of this weekend. Fellow Junior Steel Guiliana started and finished the race in eighth place, his best finish of the season thus far.
Haryanto's teammate and compatriot, Dustin Sofyan (15) also enjoyed success in Round 9, with a fifth place finish. It is Sofyan's sixth fifth-place finish of the season.
Round 10 will conclude the race meeting in Indonesia.
1st: Rio Haryanto: "There's still one more race to go and I am looking to go out and win to complete a perfect weekend. I'm quite confident for the next race and I just have to focus and concentrate on not making a mistake. There has been a lot of pressure on me to win a race here. I managed to win three races, and that's really what I wanted to achieve, so it would be great if I could do it one more time."
2nd: Gary Thompson: "The third race was quite good for me and we drove with a lot of pace throughout the race. Then Rio came onto me and coming into Turn 1, he decided to use me as a brake instead of braking so that put me out really wide and I lost a lot of time and I never quite recovered from it. The car has been quite good this weekend and hopefully it will be better this afternoon."
3rd: Axcil Jefferies: "I messed up on the third lap and it took some time for me to get back. It took time to overtake drivers like Dustin [Sofyan] and I was catching up quite quickly but in the end I was too far away to catch the leaders. I hope to get a good start in the next race and get a good pace. The track is holding up quite nicely and there is actually a lot of grip."
