STUNNING TUNJO SAVES THE DAY FOR MALAYSIA'S MERITUS GP
SEPANG (MAY 16, 2010): Colombian racing sensation Oscar Tunjo showed just what he is made off as he stormed from the back of the grid in both Formula BMW Pacific races at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) today to finish sixth in the afternoon and evening sessions.
The 14-year-old, started from 19th place in the first race of the day and 22nd in the second race but on both occasions the Meritus Grand Prix racer kept his cool to pick off his rivals one by one.
"I'm both excited and disappointed as I demonstrated I have the pace to match my rivals. Starting from the back was obviously a great disadvantage, but I think I handled myself well to get into the points," said Tunjo, whose parents Oscar Tunjo Carrillo and Francisca Sanchez were on hand to cheer him on.
"I set the fastest laps in both races and this shows the potential of the car. In the first race, I clocked 2:12.601 seconds and was even faster in the second race where I set a time of 2:11.970 seconds.
"I just need to a bit more luck in qualifying so that I can be among the leaders instead of battling from the back."
The Malaysian team, who have won the last seven Formula BMW Pacific team titles, didn't fare too well today as only Thailand's Pasin Lathouras scored points today. It was a day to forget for Mohd Afiq Ikhwan and Dustin Sofyan, who now have a mountain to climb in the Drivers' Championship.
"It has been a weekend to forget but I'm not disheartened," said Afiq. "I know I can do better and need to prove myself when we race in South Korea in August. I hope to redeem myself in the four races in Korea."
Lathouras said: "I'm glad to have finished in the points but still need to improve on other areas."
The next round will be held at the Korean International Circuit from Aug 27-29.
