Maxime Pelletier, superb 2nd place in Montreal
Montreal, June 7th, 2008. -- Maxime Pelletier came very close to earn his first Formula BMW America victory today, loosing a drag to the stripe by a nose to Brasilian Ricardo Favoretto in the first race of a double header at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, as undercard of the Canadian Grand Prix. Starting from sixth place on the grid, the 17-year old Montreal driver stormed to the front of the 16-car grid and was already in second place by the end of the second lap closing in on the leader. After a full course yellow caused by a three-car collision that called for the safety car, Pelletier went back to work on lap eight and made a superb move for first place. But on the ultimate lap, the eventual winner braked very deep in the last hairpin and from then it was a dash for the checkered flag between both contenders. Although he was disappointed with the end result, Pelletier came away with another podium and valuable points that put him confortably in second place in the standings. He will have another chance tomorrow in the second round starting in seventh place in the number 10 BioCig single seater.
"I wanted to focus on reeling in good laps when I took the lead, cheered Pelletier. I had a strong car and I thought Ricardo (Favoretto) was farther behing when I came to the last hairpin. When I saw him jump to the inside I knew I was sure pass him on the exit; but I had to brake hard to avoid him and Mikael (Grenier) made a little contact with my car. From then we just sprinted to the finish and I lost by about a yard. I would have liked to win in front of my home crowd but I am happy with second and the points I earn in the standings. I will get another chance tomorrow and I know I have to be patient if I want to do the same I did today. The car was strong and we will make sure it is trimmed the same way. After all, there are still eleven races on the schedule."
