Making his professional car racing debut this weekend as part of the Monterey Festival of Speed, David Ostella had an auspicious first run at Laguna Seca on Saturday. After qualifying fourth overall with what was his best lap of the weekend to that point, the 16-year-old Canadian had a good start and diced at the front throughout a hectic opening lap, then set the fastest lap of the race afterward in running to his first checkered flag.

"In qualifying I was focussed and stayed focussed throughout the session," he said late Saturday from California, where he earned the outside of row two with a lap of 1:28.310 seconds. "I was nervous for the race, but also excited at the same time. I had an amazing start on the outside, but so did the others so I was only able to keep my position. I filed into fourth and passed for third going into turn six but over-slowed through the corner and two karts got by on exit. Next lap I dropped a wheel at the same turn and the dirt sucked me into a spin. I didn't give up afterward, and had the fastest lap of the race in finishing seventh."

Today the Formula BMW Americas drivers go through the same process with a qualifying session in the morning and a race in the afternoon. David is feeling positive heading in, and once again showed he learns quickly. "Today was not the greatest race of my life," he dead-panned following his first start, "but I set the fastest lap of the race - knowing that I pushed it too hard and made too many mistakes. Now I know what I can do and what to expect going into the second round on Sunday."
