Strong Formula BMW Americas Debut for Ruiz at Laguna Seca

(Monterey, CA) 19 May 2008--Alexandre Ruiz had a strong debut race weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca as the Formula BMW Americas Scholarship racer scored a fifth place finish in race one before improving one spot in the second race to finish in fourth. The combined results will see Ruiz enter the next Formula BMW Americas weekend ranked second in the Rookie points standings after making a smooth transition to racing cars from a successful career in karting.

Race one provided some frustration as the young Brazilian was the meat in an over-aggression sandwich when the field entered turn one on the first lap. Despite showing more patience than one might expect from a 15 year old karting champ by leaving good space around him at the start, Ruiz was none the less hit as two competitors tried to force their way by and made contact with him from the outside and inside lines.

The resulting damage put paid to his podium aspirations as his Formula BMW racer suffered from severe understeer, although Ruiz was able to bring the machine home in fifth place to score his first points in car racing competition.

Sunday's race two saw Ruiz lead his Apex-HBR Racing Team squad by qualifying fourth on the grid, less than half a second off the pole winning time before bringing home another good points result with a run to fourth place at the finish.

"I was hoping to be on the podium this weekend, but this was still a good start to the season," said Ruiz, who prepared for his first visit to Laguna Seca by training on video games to learn the track. "This Laguna Seca track is so cool, such a great place to race and I had a lot of fun driving this car. The team did a good job all weekend. I think with this first event behind me, now I will look ahead to race as part of the Formula One race weekend in Canada. I think it will be a big thrill, and I just can't wait."
