Harvey wins at home.
Silverstone, 10 July 2010. The Silverstone crowd was treated to its first home win of the weekend when Jack Harvey (GB/Fortec Motorsports) romped to his fifth victory of the season. Following him over the line was Robin Frijns (NL/Josef Kaufmann Racing), the only other driver to have won this year, while Carlos Sainz (ES/Eurointernational) completed the podium and was the winning Rookie for the sixth time in seven races.
It was Harvey who made the best start by beating polesitter, Sainz, off the line. The two went into the first corner in this order, but during the first lap Frijns got by the Spaniard, as did Facu Regalia (AR/Eifelland Racing). At the end of the first lap Harvey already had a one second lead, but it was fractions of a second separating the others down the field.
As the front two pulled away from the rest of the field, the battle behind was fierce and entertaining. At the end of lap four the next ten behind them were scrapping and in places were three abreast. Sainz was determined to at least win a podium position back, and on lap six was within inches of the back of Regalia's car. In a daring move he was by and Timmy Hansen (SE/Mucke Motorsport) nearly followed him but the Argentinean closed the door just in time.
There was also a battle going on for tenth between Michael Lewis (US/Eurointernational) and Javier Tarancon (ES/DAMS), but when the Spaniard spun off on lap six he gave the American some breathing space and dropped back to 15th. However, this was not the only battle still going on later in the race. Fahmi Ilyas (MY/DAMS) and Petri Suvanto (FI/Josef Kaufmann Racing) were disputing seventh and the gap between them at the end of lap eight was 0.0secs. On the next lap Ilyas was by the Finn for the spot.
The Rookies were also having some great battles with Daniil Kvyat (RU/Eurointernational) and Maciej Bernacik (PL/Mucke Motorsport) in close formation and Marc Coleselli (AU/Eifelland Racing) having his best race by far and finishing seventh.
1st Round 7: Jack Harvey (GB/Fortec Motorsports): "That was a great result. I had a pretty good start. I think Robin was right on my tail for the first three laps and then I managed to pull out a gap. I think he was getting closer at the end as he managed to reduce it, but I managed to pull out too big a gap in the middle of the race. This is my home Grand Prix so it is probably the most special win I have ever had. We have set a good base down today, so we shall see if we can do it again tomorrow fingers crossed."
2nd Round 7: Robin Frijns (NL/Josef Kaufmann Racing): "It was an exciting race. The start was not too bad as I still kept third, because I was afraid I would lose it as Facu was behind me. On the first lap I overtook Carlos and then I was behind Jack. He drove a little bit away from me in the middle of the race because I was struggling a bit to find the grip, and also overdriving the car. At the end we had the same lap times again and I have to accept he is a little bit faster than me at the moment. I was easily able to overtake Carlos because he braked early, which I did not expect. I don't know what happened behind me as I was just trying to find the pace to overtake Jack. We are going to change the car a little bit for tomorrow and I hope we can finish one place above today. "
3rd Round 7 : Carlos Sainz (ES/Eurointernational): "Not at all what I wanted today. I had a really bad start with massive wheelspin, so I lost first and then I braked too early for turn 13 and two cars passed me. I was not happy with the first lap, but then I managed to pass Facu later on. By the end of the race I had lost some grip in my rears and the car was starting to slide. I lost my pace and it was impossible to catch up to the cars in front. In one way I enjoyed the race and in another way I didn't. I enjoy racing but when you are not first after starting from pole you are not happy. Let's see tomorrow as I have a second opportunity to do well."
