The second round of Formula BMW Europe took place this weekend at Zandvoort, with the popular series taking place alongside the F3 Masters. Doru Sechelariu, Ramon Pineiro and Kevin Gilardoni were in action for Fisichella Motor Sport International.
The race weekend comprised of a free practice followed by a qualifying session ahead of the two 13-lap races. The grid positions for race one were determined by each driver's quickest qualifying time, with their second quickest time taken to set the grid for race two.
Doru Sechelariu: Qualified in 13th for race one with a lap time of 1:43.674. Lined up 15th for the second race after completing a qualifying lap of 1:44.194. Finished race one in 16th position, dropping three places from his starting grid slot. Had a very strong second race, moving up from his 15th place start to cross the line in 9th.
Ramon Pineiro: Qualified in 18th for race one and 20th for race two. Best qualifying lap was 1:44.259 and second best lap of 1:44.981. In Sunday's first race Ramon made great progress in the short 13 laps, moving up six places from his starting position to cross the line in 12th. His performance was even stronger in the second race, finishing in 11th place, shooting up nine places from his starting position.
Kevin Gilardoni: Set a time of 1:44.853 to qualify in 22nd for the first race. Lapped Zandvoort in 1:45.119 to line up 21st for race two. Improved two positions in the first race to finish in 20th and made up seven positions in the second race to finish in 15th.
The third round of Formula BMW Europe will take place next weekend (19-21 June) at Silverstone in the United Kingdom as one of the support events to the Formula 1 British Grand Prix.
Paolo Coloni, Team Principal: "It's been a difficult weekend but we have to get up to speed in qualifying, which has been our problem so far this season. In the races, all three drivers have had very good pace and performance and have been able to overtake easily. Our team and drivers did not have experience of Zandvoort, yet we showed good improvement from practice to the races. I'm looking forward to Silverstone now. We have experience there and the aim is to show a clear sign of improvement in qualifying, which will help in the races."
