FMSI announce Formula BMW Europe line-up
Heading into its second year in the competition, Fisichella Motor Sport International is pleased to reveal its driver line-up for the 2009 Formula BMW Europe championship. Leading the team will be 18-year-old Romanian Doru Sechelariu, who will be entering his second year in the series. Racing alongside him will be championship rookie Kevin Gilardoni.
Doru Sechelariu, born 19 November 1991 in Romania, began racing at the age of eight, entering the National Karting Championship in his home country. Over the following six years he won six key karting accolades before receiving dispensation in 2006 to allow him to take part in the Formula Renault 1.6 Belgium Championship at the age of just 14. He finished his first race in fourth position and won the second race of his Formula Renault career, taking the win at Zolder.2008 saw him move up to compete in the inaugural Formula BMW Europe championship and, after an encouraging debut season, he sealed off his year with an impressive double victory in Singapore in a guest appearance at the Formula BMW Pacific round.
Italian Kevin Gilardoni was born 16 March 1992 and 2009 will see him embark on his debut season in Formula BMW Europe. He began karting in 2004 at the age of 12, and had success in many competition over the following four seasons. He made his introduction on the single-seater racing stage in 2008, with a season competing in Formula Azzurra and made an impressive first showing, finishing third overall in the championship.
The 2008 Formula BMW Europe was the inaugural year of the championship after a merger of the Germany and UK competitions. It became a new, continental series for junior drivers, and formed part of the support race programme for seven European races of the FIA Formula One World Championship, giving drivers and teams unprecedented visibility and the highest level of racing. The 2009 season is sure to be even more thrilling, with FMSI determined to make its mark on the championship and aim for the series title.
Doru Sechelariu: "After my first season in Formula BMW Europe last year, I am very happy to join Fisichella Motor Sport International in 2009. I have made this choice because I am convinced that FMSI will help me to achieve my targets, and those are to win races and to be in the run for the final title. My longer-term objective is to drive in Formula 1, and that can only be achieved with good determination and excellent results. To achieve this, having the support of one of my biggest heroes in motorsport, Giancarlo Fisichella, and his team, will be very important to me."
Kevin Gilardoni: "This will be my debut season in Formula BMW Europe after a very satisfactory season in Formula Azzurra. I found myself at ease from the very first moment I drove the FMSI car and I lapped Magione under the record on my first outing. I have a very fast and experienced team-mate and I will try to match his speed as well as learning from him on the circuits that are unknown to me. My target is to be the quickest rookie of the series."
Paolo Coloni, Team Principal: "We have two very good drivers in 2009. Doru is experienced and he gives us the chance to go for the overall championship victory. After his winning experience in Singapore last year he has matured and he wants to win more races. Kevin did extremely well in Formula Azzurra in 2008 and he has shown great speed in testing, not too far from his team-mate. For sure he can be the quickest among the debutants!"
