NO REWARD AFTER STRONG QUALIFYING FOR THOMAS HYLKEMA

NÜRBURG, 02 SEPTEMBER 2007 - Thomas Hylkema has shown what he is capable of in the German Formula BMW championship at the Nurburgring circuit. The Dutchman drove his best qualifying sessions this season by setting the tenth time for the second race. In the opening race Hylkema had a bad start, but eventually managed to work himself up into a seventeenth place. The Eifelland Racing driver was on his way to the points in the final race, before having to retire in the opening lap with a damaged right wheel suspension after a collision. The next races in the Formula BMW championship will take place in three weeks (September 21-23). The Barcelona circuit in Spain will host the next round of this talent series.

FREE PRACTICE + QUALIFYING:

For the second time Hylkema came to the Nurburgring. Because of fog around the track and the bad weather conditions the 45 minutes long free practice was delayed and moved to the afternoon. On a drying track the Dutchman immediately tried to find the limits. He got into the midfield and went into the qualifying quite confident. In the first session Hylkema was not in the right rhythm yet. He ended the session in sixteenth place with a time of 1:34.000. The race director gave him a penalty for setting his fastest lap under yellow however, which meant he dropped five places. In the ten minute break between the two sessions the car was fitted with new tyres. Hylkema went out again and was right on the pace from the start. The rookie scored his best qualifying result of the session after clocking the tenth fastest time. With a 1:32.913 he was faster than his team mate Tiago Geronimi!

RACE 01 + 02:

On Saturday Hylkema did not get away well. After the warm-up lap he went to his grid position, but followed the car ahead, which did not line up correctly. When the lights went out Hylkema lost three places because of the confusing situation and got away in last place. From the back of the field he fought bravely and managed to make up a lot of positions. By setting consistent lap times Hylkema crossed the line in seventeenth place after 22 minutes of racing. In the second heat on Sunday afternoon Hylkema had an excellent start. He tried to pass Luuk Glansdorp who drove next to him. Because his compatriot cut him just before going into the first corner, Hylkema opted for an outside line. Niall Quinn took advantage of the fight between the two Dutch drivers which meant Hylkema lost two places. In the third corner he spun off the track while in the middle of a big group. Pedro Bianchi was unable to avoid the 19-year old driver and hit Hylkema. With a dented right wheel suspension he had to abandon the race in the first lap.

THOMAS HYLKEMA: "The strong qualifying was the biggest win of this weekend at the Nurburgring. After a disappointing first qualifying in which I was put back five places, I was able to change the tide in the second session by scoring the tenth time. With my 1:32.913 I was up there with the quick guys. I went in to the races quite confident. In the first race I was setting consistent lap times and finished in seventeenth place. The start of the second race was good until I spun in the chaos. Too bad, as a good result would have been possible. I know I have to learn a lot in my first year, but the qualifying is really promising for the rest of the season!"
