Nick de Bruijn scores third podium finish of the season at the Nürburgring!
NÜRBURG, AUGUST 07 2005 - Also in the eighth round of the 2005 Formula BMW ADAC Championship, Nick de Bruijn drove himself on the podium at the Nürburgring. By charging hard in the first part of the 14-lap race, De Bruijn saw chance to convert his sixth position on the grid into a deserving third place at a track which dried up quickly. The champagne on the podium instantly made De Bruijn forget his misforune from the day before when he had to settle for eighth position after a mechanical problem.
As a class for young and upcoming talented drivers, the Formula BMW ADAC proved to be a passport to success over the last couple of years. Formula One (test)drivers among whom Ralf Schumacher, Christian Klien, Timo Glock and most recently also Nico Rosberg can all decline. As all races are organised as a supporting programme of both the Formula One World Championship and the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) broad media coverage is assured. The use of identical cars, engines, tyres, and fuel for all competitors make sure that the driver is the sole factor for success in this championship.
After having enjoyed a short but well-deserved break in Italy, De Bruijn came back strong on Friday. In a rain-soaked Free Practise session De Bruijn clocked the second best time, but found himself in respectively fourth and sixth position for Saturday's and Sunday's race as he struggled in qualifying set-up wise.
NICK DE BRUIJN: "Though I pushed hard, I'm not completely satisfied with the results today. As the griplevel improved throughout the day, I started to suffer more and more from oversteer. As I did not manage to get a clear lap I had to settle for a second row and a third row starting position. This track however, offers good overtaking opportunities, so I hope to get on the podium in b oth races."
RACE 01 + 02
At the start of the openingsrace on Saturday afternoon, De Bruijn maintains his fourth starting position by staying out of trouble in the tight hairpin which follows directly after the main straight. While chasing the top 3 contenders together with fellow countryman Chris van der Drift, an engine failure in lap four suddenly forces De Bruijn to stop his charge. By making every possible effort in the remaining ten laps De Bruijn still sees chance to finish the race in eighth position. The start of the second race of the weekend on Sunday afternoon was marked by a seemingly strange decision by the Stewards of the Meeting as all teams were obliged to mount wet tyres though the track was almost already completely dried up. De Bruijn, who at that moment realised his tyres would be worn out at the end of the race, instantly choosed to attack. Already in lap three De Bruijn had gained three positions and at the end of the 14-lap race he even came quite close to finishing second.
NICK DE BRUIN: "It were two strange races. After I had to settle for 8th on Saturday after an engine failure, I was very determined to get on the podium today. Which I did! As I made great demands on the tyres in the opening stage I really suffered from tyrewear in the last few laps, but I'm used to these drifting experiences from my go-kart carreer. At my homerace in Zandvoort in three weeks time, I'd love to open some more bottles of champagne again!" <pre> RESULT RACE 01 NÜRBURGRING (SATURDAY AUGUST 06 2005) 01.
