The double header race day had as many ups and downs for Team Apex USA as the track itself, but the day ended in a terrific high with the first win for the team this season. James Kovacic, driver of the #20 Formula BMW finished round nine of the championship in first place at Lime Rock Park. It was an awesome day for this young Australian; finishing on the podium in third place in round eight; and setting the fastest race lap in both races.
Gabby Chaves, winner of round eight said, "None of us had anything for James he was like a rocket out there."
This is the first win for Kovacic in the Formula BMW series, and it moved him up to first place for the Rookie Cup Championship. "The Rookie Cup winner receives an $80,000 scholarship upon returning to the series next year," said team owner Jim Exline.
Kovacic, was ecstatic and declared it to be an unbelievable experience. "I wasn't even sure I had won, I kept asking my engineers if it was true! I am so excited and happy!"
Also in round nine, Joao Horto, driver of the #18 Formula BMW, recorded his best finish of the season in fourth place. Horto said, "I had a good car and a strong run this time, I just needed a couple more laps under green and maybe I could have had a podium finish."
Martin Sala, driver of the #19 car, skidded off the track towards the end of the session and landed in the 12th position.
During round eight of the championship, Kovacic finished third, Sala in sixth, and Horto seventh. Sala drove well in round eight, making very difficult passes. "I started in the 11th spot and made it up to sixth! I was happy with my finish because it is tough to pass on this track," said Sala.
Team Apex is now preparing for their next race at Road America, August 13th- 16th, during the Time Warner Cable Road Race Showcase Featuring the American Le Mans Series and Speed World Challenge.
