The FIA F3000 International Championship arrived at the A1-Ring, Austria, for round seven of the series, with the Nordic Racing team looking to build on it's points total with drivers Justin Wilson and Kevin McGarrity.
Today's two qualifying sessions, both held in heavy rain, saw drivers visiting the gravel traps on a regular basis. At the end of the first session, Wilson was 17th, with McGarrity 21st.
The second session started out in pouring rain, although in the final minutes of the 45 minute session, the track had started to dry. This proved good news for Justin Wilson, who managed to improve his times - up from 17th to 11th. "The car felt really good out there today, even in the heavy rain," said Wilson. "I was one of the first to cross the line, which was a shame, as if I had been at the back of the last lap then I could have improved on 11th. Still, things could have been worse. Look at (championship leader) Junqueira. The best that he could manage today was 20th, and he is the guy that we are all trying to beat." For McGarrity, the drying track proved too little too late, as he failed to qualify for his first race of the season.
"We came here knowing that the weather could be a major factor and today it was," said Team Manager Chris Mower. "Given the conditions we are happy with 11th place for Justin, although it should be noted that he was one of the first to cross the line on the final drying lap and he did so in sixth position - dropping down to 11th by the team the final car crossed the line. I think that on the final laps the pole position changed several times, showing how quickly the track conditions were changing. Justin was very happy with the car today, even in this weather and all credit must be given to him as he was lapping a second to one and-a-half seconds quicker the wetter it got. If it rains for the race I am sure that Justin is more than capable of doing a good job for us. As for Kevin, naturally we are very disappointed for him, but he made a choice to come in for slick tyres early as he felt that the track had started to dry enough. Unfortunately, for him and the team, this was the wrong decision. However, I am sure that he will bounce back from this at the next race in Germany."
