LAMMERS WINS KYALAMI F3000

Jan Lammers (Vortex Reynard 94D) outdragged poleman Kenny Brack (Madgwick Reynard 94D) into the first corner and then stayed out in front to win the Birkin Cars/TVR Formula 3000 invitation race at Kyalami on Sunday.

Lammers (NED) opened up an immediate lead on the field, having a seven second advantage over Brack (SWE) at one point. In the opening laps South African driver Stephen Watson (Nordic Lola T94-50) was lying a comfortable fourth until he tried a 'suicide' overtaking manoeuvre at The Kink, overdoing things and losing two places in the process. Less than a lap later he again overdid it and went off backwards, damaging the rear wing and ending his race.

This left British driver Richard Dean (Madgwick Reynard 92D) in a fairly comfortable third place ahead of fellow countryman Gareth Rees (Omegaland Reynard 94D) and Irish racer Dino Morelli in the second of the Omegaland cars.

Throughout the 35 laps Brack continued to make up time on Lammers and four laps from the finish had closed right up on the Dutch driver but, in his efforts to build a passing chance, overdid it at The Kink and spun. He managed to control the 360 degree spin and get going without losing a place, but was now too far behind Lammers to make any impression on the Dutch driver.

Hilton Cowie, the sole surviving South African driver brought his Nordic Lola T93-50 home in sixth place.
