Coloni happy with strong first race showing
Coloni Motorsport team principal Paolo Coloni is relishing the next round of the FIA Formula 3000 International Championship after a promising start to the season at Imola today (April 24).
Coloni Motorsport driver Jeffrey van Hooydonk opened the team's points- scoring account with a sixth place finish while José Maria Lopez, who drives for the Coloni-managed CMS Performance squad, posted the fastest race lap before seeing his hopes of a certain podium finish end when he crashed at the Variante Alta chicane.
Mathias Lauda, in the second CMS car, was delayed by a drive through penalty, which was imposed when he overshot a chicane. Despite not gaining an advantage, Lauda was still penalised and was forced to settle for 12th position. Can Artam, meanwhile, retired from the race when an electrical problem intervened.
"I am very happy with the speed we have shown today," said Paolo Coloni. "We had three drivers making their debuts today and they have done a very good job. The speed of Lopez proves the team has the pace not only in the tests but also in the races and we are very pleased with how well Mathias and Jeffrey performed. It was a shame Cam didn't get the result he deserved but there are many races left and we are very confident."
The performances of the Coloni Motorsport-managed drivers are summarised below. The championship resumes in Barcelona (Spain) on May 8.
Can Artam (Coloni Motorsport): Did not finish
Retired from the race after two laps with an electrical failure: "I feel very unhappy for what happened to him," said Paolo Coloni. "We are confident this problem won't happen again and we are looking forward to seeing him continue his learning at the next race."
Jeffrey van Hooydonk (Coloni Motorsport): 6th
Finished sixth. Suffered a spin shortly after his pit stop to change tyres: "He had a slightly slower than planned pit stop due to a problem with the rear left tyre," said Paolo Coloni. "I think this lost him some confidence as he had a small spin shortly afterwards. But points are very important and we are pleased with his result."
José Maria Lopez (CMS Performance): Did not finish (fastest race lap)
"For a driver in his first race in this category he did very well and the fastest race lap has proved our pace," said Paolo Coloni. "We had a good strategy in place and his first proper lap after the pit stop was his quickest. But it was a real shame when he crashed. He clipped the kerb and hit the barriers. He is okay but I know he was hoping for a lot more."
Mathias Lauda (CMS Performance): 12th
"Mathias drove very well," said Paolo Coloni. "We were very disappointed with his penalty because he had a possibility to fight for one of the points. Nevertheless Mathias drove well and performed well and we will be hoping the strong form continues at the next race."
