Coloni Motorsport took podium in the first race in Imola with a great Ricardo Sperafico.
Together with the first race of the F.I.A. F.3000 International in Imola came also the first podium of 2003 for Coloni Motorsport, thanks to the outstanding Ricardo Sperafico, author of a perfect race which allowed him to earn the third place.
After the good qualifying sessions of Friday, Sperafico was today in the second row of the starting grid: after the start the Brazilian, BMW WilliamsF1 tester, made a good sprint, gaining one place and taking the third position. Starting from this moment nobody could catch Sperafico that completed the 31 laps without a single mistake, conquering the first precious points for Coloni Motorsport.
Great the race of Zsolt Baumgartner too: the Hungarian, started 16th because of a gearbox problem which stopped him during qualify, rose trough the field -- seven positions! -- thanks to an exalting series of overtakings, in particular the ones done on Minassian and Kiesa. Unfortunately, when he was running ninth on lap 28, Kiesa went straight in the Variante Bassa and he landed on the Zsolt's car; the Hungarian lose one position and he finished tenth.
The team will now start to work for the Barcelona (E), where --after the excellent performance of today- Coloni Motorsport will aim straight to the victory.
Zsolt Baumgartner, driver: "It was a very heavy and difficult race, there were many crashes and accidents and I started nearly from the bottom of the grid. I'm not fully satisfied with today but I noticed the times I made when I was able to drive "clean" are really competitive. Overall, the car is good, I like a car like this".
Ricardo Sperafico: "I made a good start and so I had the opportunity of overtaking on the first corner and earning one position. After the first corner, in spite of a slight oversteer, I thought only to the championship and to finish the race"
Enzo Coloni, Coloni Motorsport: "It was a superb race, I can't say other. I'm only sorry for Zsolt, he was unlucky in qualify but he showed what he can do".
Paolo Coloni, Team Principal: "A positive week end, I'm very happy with this result and with a season that starts with a podium, we can now look forward to Barcelona hoping for the victory. I'm also satisfied with the Baumgartner performance and with the one of the Red Bull Junior Team".
