Friesacher third fastest for Coloni in Germany
Patrick Friesacher maintained the strong form he has shown since his mid-season switch to Coloni Motorsport by qualifying in third position for the seventh round of the FIA Formula 3000 International Championship, which takes place at Hockenheim in Germany later today (July 24).
But it proved a frustrating session for Jose Maria Lopez in the lead Coloni Motorsport-managed CMS Performance entry. The Argentine could only manage the 13th fastest time, one place behind team-mate Mathias Lauda. Can Artam of Turkey, driving the second Coloni-run car, set the 17th fastest time.
The qualifying session, which took place in temperatures as hot as 35 degrees centigrade, wasn't trouble-free for Friesacher either after his car developed an electrical fault shortly after the Austrian driver had clocked his best lap. This meant he was unable to record any faster times although team principal Paolo Coloni was pleased with his performance.
"Patrick did a very good job again today and third position is good for him and the team," said Coloni. "I think he has a good chance to get a good finish in the race today.
"We had lots of problems with the performance of Lopez's tyres, which was a big concern. His car had the same set-up as our other drivers but we could not find the grip. We have been struggling since the beginning of the year with the reaction of the car to different sets of tyres and we had the problem again.
"We are a bit unhappy because we have won here for the last two years with the same car and the same level of driver," Coloni continued. "It is frustrating because we are experiencing a problem we cannot seem to control."
