The race was incident packed, with the first accident occurring at the high speed Mandarin Bend, which brought out the safety car for two laps. Hanson had already climbed up to tenth place by this time. The safety car pulled in with seven laps remaining and Hanson immediately resumed his progress to the front.
Hanson moved into fourth place with four laps remaining, and then set about catching the leaders with a series of fastest laps, culminating in a new lap record on the final lap of the race. The new lap record eclipsed the old record held by current Formula 3 star, Takuma Sato, by nearly 2 seconds.
The race was won by frenchman Phillipe Descombes, with Mark Goddard second and Yang Liu third. Hanson just missed out on the podium, catching Liu on the last lap and finishing under the rear wing of the chinese driver.
