Mosport, Canada. May 20, 2001. Brazilian Luciano Gomide continued his series of victories in USF3 winning Round 1 of the 2001 United States Formula 3 Championship at Mosport International Raceway in front of his teammate John C. Antonino, from Bakersfield, California.
The GOL/Impact Protection System Dallara F3VW of Luciano Gomide completed the 23 laps of Mosport International Raceway in 29:47.542 at the average speed of 166.61 km/hr with an 11.865 second margin over the GRAPEKING/ARRA/UPTOWN/RLC Dallara F3VW of John C.Antonino.
Luciano Gomide, starting from the Pole ( 1:14.481) took the lead from John C.Antonino on lap 8 and controlled the race up to the finish. John C. Antonino, after a spin on lap 9, was able to reduce the gap to Gomide with a series of fast laps, including the fastest of the race (1:15.718).
The two Eurointernational Dallaras dominated the field from practice to race, showing the incredible performance of the Formula 3 cars to the 78,000 spectators of the Kenwood Communications Victoria Week End at Mosport.
"I am very happy with this result," said Gomide, "because I came from the back after a problem at the start and on Tuesday during testing. It has been great race with Johnny (Antonino). My Team remain at the top and have done an incredible job during the winter for improve our Dallara F3".
"I tried to keep Luciano behind for several laps" said Johnny Antonino, "but he was very fast every where. My spin was the only mistake of the weekend and I am very happy for my performances and my team. This year I hope to continue my battle with Luciano and gain as much experience as possible."
