50th Macau Grand Prix, 13-16 November 2003
Next week (10-16 November 2003) Robert Doornbos will race the prestigious International Macao Grand Prix, with English Team Menu. The Dutch driver will be on the streets of Macau for the 50th running and, according to the provisional entry list, this year the International F3 event promises to be one of the most fiercely ones with the world's best young drivers vying for victory.
Doornbos cannot be underestimated, however. After finishing the highly competitive F3 Euro Series championship in 9th final position, Robert also demonstrated what he can do by scoring a fantastic pole position at Spa in the British F3 championship, this year. Doornbos, in fact, run two double races in the British series with Team Menu: at Spa-Francorchamps and at Brands Hatch, where he finished on podium in second position. In all the season the 22 year-old was able to fight for top positions (always finishing into the point zone) and achieved brilliant results and podium. Since his debut in motor racing (1999, Opel Lotus UK Winter Series) Robert has always impressed for his capacity to get easily in confidence with the car and the team, and to improve himself. Robert's deep determination and his dare are responsible for his fast evolution in his professional career. The passion for speed and competition are hallmarks of Robert Doornbos.
Robert will be joined in Team Menu by Rob Austin, regular in the British F3 championship with Team Menu.
Robert Doornbos commented: "I'm really excited to be in Macau for this important event; and I'm twice happy because I'm here with the team I like much. This is an incredible track and every driver should race at least once in their life. If you are quick here you can be quick anywhere; last year I finished 6th but this time I would like more. I'm very confident and still excited about how my F3000 test went, at Jerez last week, where I had the fastest time of the all day. I hope everything will go right here so that I can achieve an important result."
ROBERT DEBUTS on a F3000 car, at Jerez - Last 06th November Robert tested with FIA F3000 Champion Team Arden Motorsport, at Jerez (Spain). At his debut on a 560hp, F3000, car the Dutch driver set the fastest time of the entire testing day, with a quickest lap time of 1:32.33, in front of Nico Rosberg and 6 other drivers. Robert didn't test on 7th but his time was so good that he could keep 2nd fastest time of both the Official testing days.
"It was a really amazing and exciting experience for me," said Robert "for the first time, on a F3000 car! I've really enjoyed this test and have been really impressed with the performance of the Arden F3000 car. The grip on new tyres is quite dramatic and I was pleased with the time I was able to achieve. I spent all the day, yesterday, to talk with my engineer and to better understand this car. This morning we also simulated a pit-stop. I would also like to thank Doct. Riccardo Ceccarelli and Formula Medicine (www.formulamedicine.com) for the physical and athletic preparation they gave me because after the test I was absolutely in perfect shape".
I was extremely impressed," said Team Arden boos Christian Horner. "He built up to it and then put it all together on a new set of tyres. He's potentially very good." "Robert did an excellent job coping with the transition from F3 extremely well and recorded a very competitive time".
