Sensational drive through the field ends prematurely Carlo van Dam unrewarded at Macau

Macau - Carlo van Dam seemed to be heading for a sensational result in today's Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix, but his impressive drive through the field ended prematurely when another car crashed right in front of the Dutchman's. On Macau's tight street circuit, Carlo moved up from 24th to sixth place in seven laps and even looked to be on his way to a podium finish, when Spaniard Roberto Merhi crashed out and blocked the road for the closely following Van Dam.

"Things went very well, but Merhi's accident was simply unavoidable", says Carlo, who claimed pole position last Friday, but retired on the opening lap of the qualifying race yesterday, having punctured his tyre in the first corner before another car crashed into him later that lap. Consequently, the Dutchman had to start from the back in today's final. "I had a good start and quickly moved up to ninth place. I then just kept on passing cars left, right and centre. I was already right on Merhi's tail and about to overtake him on the next straight, when he hit the wall hard. There was no room, but even so I brushed his car only just. That damaged my suspension and a tyre. A shame, really, because I would have finished in the top three. I had passed Brendon Hartley already when Merhi crashed out and Brendon went on to finish third. All in all it was an eventful weekend, in which we obviously had the speed to win this race as well, but things turned out a bit different. I am very happy for the team, however, because [team mate] Kunimoto won. That is great for Toyota Team TOM's and underlines the calibre of the Japanese championship once more."
