Frankfurt/Main, August 11, 2003. The 13th Marlboro Masters at the 4.3 kilometres long Circuit Park Zandvoort/NL was won by Austrian Christian Klien with a Dallara-Mercedes from Nelson Angelo Piquet (BRA, Dallara-Honda), the son of former F1-world champion Nelson Piquet. Third place in the most prestigious Formula 3 race of the year went to the points leader in the Formula 3 Euro Series, Ryan Briscoe (AUS, Dallara-Opel). 37 young talents from all over the world were on the grid during the hot race by the North Sea coast in front of over 50,000 spectators. The field included the best drivers from national Formula 3 series and since last year, all of them have been racing with KUMHO-ECSTA-tyres. The Korean tyre manufacturer has a five year contract as the exclusive supplier of the Marlboro Masters. Moreover, KUMHO is a partner of the Circuit Park Zandvoort.

"It was the most important win in my career so far, because the Marlboro Masters is the biggest thing you can win in Formula 3", the happy winner Christian Klien of the team Mucke Motorsport from Berlin/D said. "The KUMHO-tyres were perfect. They provided grip pretty quickly and were incredibly consistent. I even drove my fastest lap just before the end of the race." The 20-year old Austrian had started second on the grid after having been fastest of his qualifying group. He took the lead from Piquet at the start and never was to lose his lead until the chequered flag was out. Only 0.3 seconds behind Klien, Nelson Piquet jr. came home in second place with Briscoe another three seconds down.

Major effort for KUMHO: 800 ECSTA race tyres fitted during the weekend

"For us, the weekend was a great success", said also Norbert Hessenthaler, head of marketing of KUMHO Europe GmbH. "We are happy to be the exclusive supplier of this prestigious race and supplying the world's best Formula 3 drivers with our ECSTA race tyres." For KUMHO Motorsport UK, the weekend also was a huge effort: some 800 tyres were fitted during the race weekend. All race tyres have been developed and constructed at KUMHO's in Korea. A new race tyre, the "ECSTA S 700" compound had especially been developed for the Marlboro Masters, in order to guarantee equal chances for all drivers and not give an advantage for competitors from the Formula 3 Euro Series. After all, since the beginning of this year, KUMHO has also been the exclusive supplier for this new international championship. Next weekend already, Christian Klien and his fellow drivers from the Formula 3 Euro Series will once again be fighting for victory and positions. Supporting the DTM at the Nurburgring (August 15-17), the series will be starting into the second half of the season.
