Carlo van Dam sets new record

Fuji - Newly crowned Japanese Formula 3 champion Carlo van Dam today set a new record by finishing second at Fuji in the sixteenth round of the season. He thus claimed an unprecedented sixteenth consecutive podium finish in the Japanese F3 championship, which he won yesterday at Fuji already, after scoring his seventh victory of the year.

"Today, I messed up my start a bit with too much wheel spin. It must have looked like I was trying to do a burn out...", says Carlo, who had started from pole position once again. "To be honest, I was surprised I still managed to get into the first corner in second place after that start. It was a bit of a shame of course, for I really wanted to win today's race as well, but if a disappointing race means finishing second then I don't think I can complain." The Dutchman clinched the Japanese Formula 3 title yesterday after scoring his seventh victory of the season. Having finished in the top three in all the races so far this year and regularly scored extra points by taking pole position and setting fastest laps in the race, Carlo had been leading the championship for months already. Consequently, last year's German Formula 3 champion managed to decide the Japanese title fight after fifteen of the eighteen rounds, thus winning back to back Formule 3 championship titles.

"But the year is far from over", Carlo says. "The last two rounds of the Japanese championship will be held at Sugo during the third weekend of September. And then on October 16 there is the Formula 3 Grand Prix of Macau of course, where the best F3-drivers from the Japanese and British series and the Euroseries will compete against each other. I already know the track, for I raced there last year for the first time, a race which led to the contract with Toyota Team TOM's. For the Grand Prix we have planned a test program in order to try and head for Macao in the best shape possible."
