Cheng Cong Fu Swerving at Spa F1 Circuit looking for the F3 Master in Zolder
During the 27th -- 28th July, 2007, the legendary and picturesque Belgian Formula One Grand Prix circuit at Spa-Francorchamps hosted rounds 13 and 14 of the British Formula 3 Championship. It was a productive weekend for Frankie Cheng and he scored two second places during the qualifying sessions and finished both races as the runner-up.
With overnight rain saturating the track and heavy rain still continuing throughout the day, race two was started behind the safety car for the first two laps. Worsening visibility caused by the torrential rain surely affected the racing rhythm of the drivers. An accident happened to Frankie's teammate bringing out the safety car one more time towards the end of the race. Race two was also ended with the safety car proving how testing this race weekend was.
Although it was Frankie's very first visit to Spa, the previous days practice sessions had prepared and familiarized him with this world-renowned challenging F1 circuit and had put him on a level playing field with other drivers. Nevertheless, Frankie had suffered set-up problems with his car for the whole weekend and in the end, he scored 2nd place, 10 points behind the championship leader Mexican Perez. However, he set the fastest lap in National class during race two and as a result, won an extra point for this.
Frankie said, "The whole team had been working really hard on the set-up of the car but we didn't succeed in finding the best solutions for this weekend. I could feel the car had been improving from race one to race two but not to the best condition as I had hoped. It was just not good enough compared to the others but I feel that I've gained valuable experience here. For the remaining four rounds of the championship, I am expecting the best and hopefully I can capitalize my former experiences on some of the tracks and perform better to be able to finally take the championship lead".
During the 4th-5th of August, Frankie will be competing in the Masters of Formula 3 at Zolder where the cream of the current Formula 3 crop from all over Europe will convene and compete; for its first experience with a F3 A class car the Chinese ace will join Manor Motor Sport with a Dallara F307 powered by Mercedes, a return to the team that launched him in the Formula Renault UK.
