Top three start for Team BRM
Team BRM's Karl Reindler, UTS Geophysics Dallara F301 Spiess Opel, will start both races of the opening round of the 2004 Australian Formula 3 race from third position on the grid. Commenting after the sessions Reindler was upbeat about his chances this weekend. "I am very happy with the car. I lost a few opportunities in the second session by staying in the pits too long during the session. I came in after setting the fastest lap of the session, and didn't go out again until Gilmour went faster. I can't wait for race one tomorrow morning, the race is going to be very close at the front."
Reindler was locked in a tight battle with his team mate Marcus Marshall, AEG Power Tools Dallara F301 Spiess Opel, in the early stages of both sessions. This battle was cut short in the first session after Marshall had completed just 4 laps, when his engine stopped. The cause of this was a broken throttle position drive. In the second session it was a selector problem in the transmission that is not uncommon in these cars that forced Marshall out. Speaking after the race, Marshall remained positive about his position for the two races this weekend. "On the second lap 5th gear was not good, and then on my 4th lap I lost the gear all together, despite all the problems we have had today I am still optimistic for the races." Although Marshall was restricted to just 4 laps in each session, Marshall was still able to set a time good enough for 6th position on the grid for both races this weekend.
Team BRM's third driver, Craig Rundle, Dallara F398 Spiess Opel, qualified 1st in his class for both races, qualifying in 8th position for both races this weekend. Rundle is filling in for Team BRM's regular driver, young New Zealander, Nic Jordan who was unable to race this weekend and will make his debut for the Team at the Oran Park round April 18 -- 20.
