Piccola WINS race 1 at the Gold Coast Indy300.

John Martin and Piccola Scuderia Corse have simply obliterated the rest of the Australian Formula 3 field today in the wake of their performance at the Nikon Indy300 on the Gold Coast.

Driving Piccola Scuderia Corse's F307, John put his red Dallara on pole-position by a whopping 1.58s - probably the largest margin set by any driver in this year's Australian championhip, and indeed the fastest F3 car ever to roam the streets of Surfers Paradise.

Initially John made an awkward start to Race 1 from pole position allowing James Winslow to take a brief lead before patiently making the right move and leaving both Team BRM and the rest of the F3 peloton wheezing in his wake - winning by 5 seconds. Without any testing or previous track experience Martin and the Piccola team have simply outclassed everyone today - smashing a four year old lap record in front of their sponsors.

John Martin:

"The team and the car are sensational, and I'm very happy to be apart of Piccola's Indy weekend. This has been a great event for my preparation for A1 and for the sponsors, and I couldn't have chosen a better team to race with than Piccola Scuderia Corse. They are the best team in OZ F3."

Team Principal Rudolf Masi:

"John just showed how competitive and fast he is as a professional racing driver, and everyone will be closely following his progress in the Ferrari powered A1GP series for 2008/2009. We really couldn't have done this without the support of the sponsors with a big thankyou to HDT, [ yellow tail ] wines, Beef Eater Barbeques and everyone else for their support. The Bilstein-developed shocks have really given us the edge setup-wise this weekend and the team has worked hard all year with all of our promising and talented drivers. There are two races left to go, so we'll give it everything we've got".
