2001 NSW Formula 2 Championship
Round 2 - Eastern Creek March 24-25.
The second round of the State championship kicked off under sunny skies at the ultra modern Eastern Creek Raceway west of Sydney. Nine cars entered round 2 and teams were quick to take advantage of a dry track, as round 1 was hampered by wet weather.
Newcastle pair Kevin Lewis and Craig Murphy were the pacesetters in Qualifying on Saturday morning. Lewis worked his time down to a 1m35.8770 by the end of the 20-minute session. Murphy had to be happy with a 1m38.2612 a bit over 2 seconds behind. Murphy admitted that he still had a little bit spare. Next came John Muddle in the Ralt RT30. Then came Terry Robinson, Don Hewitt in the 1m42's. Ted Dunford, Tony Wood and Tom Brickley rounded out the field. Robin Bishop didn't get out in his Richards 201.
Race 1 was a 5 lapper on Saturday afternoon. The track was fast and dry. Craig Murphy got the jump on Lewis going into the first corner. Soon Lewis was back in front and both Murphy and Lewis gave us a great battle. Behind them Muddle was a distant third with Robertson, Hewitt, Brinkley and Wood behind. Ted Dunford's HTG let go on lap 4 in a big way. So much so he went out bought David Choon's Reynard that day. Lewis was the winner, but Murphy set fastest lap of 1m36.7942. Winners average lap speed 142 kph.
Sunday greeted competitors and teams with rain. Race 2 was a 7-lap affair with Hewitt and Murphy not competing in the wet races and Dunford not able to repair his steed. Lewis though put all that behind him to put in a dominant performance to win by 14 seconds to Tony Wood. Tom Brickley was in second for most of the race until he ran out of fuel. John Muddle was 3rd. Terry Robinson short circuited his electric's and only lasted 2 laps. Lewis, again, dominated race 3. Brinkley, with fuel in the tank, took second over Wood, Muddle and Robinson.
The next State round will be at Eastern Creek on June 23-24, while the Club Championship will be at Oran Park May 6. See you at the track.
