HOLLINGS TAKES THE DOUBLE AND SETS THE PACE AT ORAN PARK
Yorkshireman Charlie Hollings stormed to victory as he took both wins in the second round of the Kumho Tyres Formula 3 Championship at the Oran Park Raceway in Sydney over the weekend. Following two wins in the Formula 3 non-championship rounds at the Melbourne Grand Prix in March, Charlie blasted the rest of the field out of the Sydney Harbour water with a lead of over two seconds in both races, gaining maximum points in race one with a fastest lap.
The Astuti Motorsport driver soared from eighth place in the championship to second; slashing the gap with leader Tim Macrow from 24 points down to 11 and firmly positioning himself as one of the main contenders for the Australian title.
The weekend started well for the young Brit as he set the pace in both qualifying sessions and earned two pole positions as a result. Race-day brought little change as Charlie led the pack from the grid in both races, comfortably gaining a two and a half second advantage in race one and over three seconds in race two.
"I've had a fantastic weekend here in Sydney. After the wins in Melbourne it was really important to start clocking-up points for the Championship and 43 in one weekend can't be bad! The team at Astuti has been tremendously supportive, the testing has been brilliant and we've been working really well together. The car has been great -- I was always able to push a bit more when I needed to and it felt quick and consistent. And I'm sure we'll be getting even faster times in the next round."
The Formula 3 drivers will be heading to Victoria in two weeks to line-up for the third championship round that will take place at the Phillip Island GP circuit on the 5-6 May 2007.
