VAR relies on proven combination
(16.02.2009) Van Amersfoort Racing (VAR) certainly must be regarded as one of the 2009 ATS Formula 3 Cup favourites. Following the successful debut season with Volkswagen as engine partner, the Dutch squad again relies on the 2-litre power units from Wolfsburg, Germany. The team's two Dallaras F307 Volkswagen will be raced by Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium) and Stef Dusseldorp (Netherlands).
Two race wins and six runner-up finishes - that was Laurens Vanthoor's impressive record in his maiden car-racing season. Furthermore, the grammar-school pupil also secured three pole positions and set two fastest race laps, in 2008. Vanthoor most definitely represents one of the truly promising motor-racing talents and may hope for a bright future. Particularly as he has not yet turned 18.
"I know that I will have to meet high expectations, this year but I also am pressurising myself," reveals Vanthoor. "Having secured a lot of runner-up finishes, last year, I succeeded in also winning races in the closing stages of the season. Now I want to battle it out for race wins straightaway to become a factor in the fight for the title. After all, we've got a competitive package: I truly rely on my team and am convinced of the Volkswagen engine's competitiveness."
While Laurens Vanthoor is going to contest his second ATS Formula 3 Cup season and is regarded as one of the favourites, due to the successes he achieved in 2008, his team-mate Stef Dusseldorp is a rookie. "It's a major step for me but I am convinced that the ATS Formula 3 Cup offers the best chances of making it to international motor racing," says the Dutchman from Lichtenvoorde. The 19-year old benefits from a crucial advantage, in his Formula 3 debut season: Dusseldorp knows the team of his compatriot Frits van Amersfoort very well as he has been racing two years for the squad in Formula Renault. In 2007, he usually secured midfield positions and in 2008, he used to be a top-ten finisher.
Just as Laurens Vanthoor who grew up close to the former Belgian GP circuit, Zolder, Stef Dusseldorp also made his first steps on the motor-racing ladder in karting. "Kart racing still represents the best preparation for a successful single-seater racing career," underlines Frits van Amersfoort. "Therefore, our chances in the 2009 ATS Formula 3 Cup season are ideal: with an experienced and evidently fast Formula 3 driver on the one hand and a promising newcomer on the other we are well prepared."
"Supporting young talents always represented a top priority for Volkswagen," explains Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. "Therefore, we are delighted with cooperating with two strong partners in the 2009 ATS Formula 3 Cup season: Van Amersfoort Racing and newcomers Performance Racing."
