New combination enters ATS Formula 3 Cup
The ATS Formula 3 Cup can welcome another team and another new driver on its starting grid. URD Rennsport will enter Formula 3 together with Austrian Klaus Bachler. Team and driver know each other well: in 2009, they jointly contested the ADAC Formula Masters.
17-year old Klaus Bachler enters the ATS Formula 3 Cup accompanied by a lot of advance praise. In 2009, he finished runner-up in the ADAC Formula Masters for URD and in the year before, he also had convinced by finishing third in the series. So, another young driver and a promising team are making the step up from the Formula Masters to the ATS Formula 3 Cup.
The name hidden behind the team URD Rennsport is extremely popular in the motor-racing world. After all, the Team Principal is Harald Ungar, the brother of the Technical Director of HWA GmbH who has been responsible for the design of the DTM Mercedes C-Class. The company URD can look back on 40 years of racing-car design and construction history. Now, the squad is ready to meet a new challenge: Formula 3. "Klaus gas got the chance of making the step up to Formula 3 and this resulted in our ATS Formula 3 Cup involvement," reveals Team Principal Harald Ungar. "We have to wait and see how the first races will run for us and want to improve consistently, from there."
On 29th March at the Hockenheimring, Bachler will make his first outing behind the wheel of his Dallara F307 Mercedes. The decision to contest the ATS Formula 3 Cup was made at short notice as the team wanted to find the budget for the full season first. "For a long time, our Formula 3 involvement was on the borderline as it is anything but easy to finance a Formula 3 season reliably. Therefore, I'm particularly happy that we succeeded in doing so, now," beams Bachler.
At the same time, the involvement at short-notice also represents a problem when it comes to defining the goals for the forthcoming season. "This year's Cup field is the most competitive in the history of the series," stresses Ungar. "Therefore, coming fifth would represent a big success for us." In addition to its Formula 3 involvement, URD also continues its ADAC Formula Masters activities. While it has not yet been determined if Bachler will be joined by a team-mate on the ATS Formula 3 Cup grid. "But we definitely will contest the opening rounds of the season as one-car team," concludes Ungar.
