(06.05.2008) The ATS Formula 3 Cup resounds throughout the country. With just one race weekend contested, everybody is talking about the outstanding quality of the drivers on the 2008 season's starting grid of Germany's fastest single-seater series. Two weeks ago, the up-and-coming race series celebrated a perfect start into its season. Quick rookies, exotic drivers, competitive girls and matured established racers made for an extremely interesting mix - and the same will apply to the second event, held this weekend at Oschersleben.
The Magdeburger Borde region, or, more precisely, the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, will stage the third and fourth rounds of the 2008 ATS Formula 3 Cup season. All those involved will have to cope with high expectations, particularly as the Formula 3 will be the fastest series in the event held on the Whitsun weekend at the Eastern German racetrack. The tighter a circuit and the more corners it features, the better for the fast single-seaters. An adventure the young drivers just can't wait for.
And two of them will have to compensate for a lot: Austria's Philipp Eng and Colombian Sebastian Saavedra. Both secured a pole and a second grid position in the season kick-off but in both rounds, they delivered lousy starts to impress with remarkable chases, afterwards. While Belgium's Laurens Vanthoor had to cope with a similar fate. "We have practiced so many starts, in the off-season, and when things got series we failed to deliver, nevertheless," he said. "At the end of the day, simulating on your own is something completely different than standing on the grid surrounded by 30 other cars."
Matteo Chinosi travels to Oschersleben as championship leader. The Italian convinced at Hockenheim by winning a race and finishing runner-up in the other, thus giving his Ombra Team its best result in German single-seater racing to date. "It was a fantastic weekend for us," beamed Ombra Team Principal Massimo Polini. We always believed in the ATS Formula 3 Cup. It has turned into the new home for our team and into an internationally well-known series, at the same time."
The third and fourth rounds, held on 10th and 11th May, will be anything but easy. The Oschersleben track is regarded as a challenging and gruelling one. Who wants to be fast, there, has to take his car to its very limits and go hard over the curbs. While the limited overtaking opportunities add to the challenge. The only chance of passing a rival out of the slipstream is offered at the end of the long pit straight. And the drivers are well aware of this fact. Hence, the racing will be close, at Oschersleben.
