Van Amersfoort Racing - three competitive team-mates
As usual, Team Van Amersfoort Racing has signed a competitive driver line-up for the coming ATS Formula 3 Cup season. In 2009, the squad won the title with Laurens Vanthoor and this year, the Dutch team wants to add another title to its collection. In the 2010 ATS Formula 3 Cup season, Dutchman Stef Dusseldorp, Austria's Willi Steindl and German Daniel Abt will race the team's three Dallara F307 Volkswagen single-seaters.
"Our 2010 driver line-up represents an interesting mix of hungry young guns, promising talents and experienced drivers," says Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. In addition to Van Amersfoort Racing (three vehicles), the teams Performance Racing (two cars), Motopark Academy (four) and HS Technik (three) also are going to contest the season 'powered by Volkswagen'.
One driver receives a lot of early praise and is regarded as the clear title favourite: Stef Dusseldorp who is going to contest his second Formula 3 season, this year. In 2009, the Dutchman celebrated two race wins and secured a total of 11 podiums. So, the Dutchman who contested the 2009 ATS Formula 3 Cup season is the most experienced Van Amersfoort Racing driver. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that he has set himself an ambitious goal: "I want to win the title, just as Laurens Vanthoor did in his second ATS Formula 3 Cup season. Nonetheless, I have to admit that the pressure is immense as the competitiveness of the grid has once again increased a lot, this year."
Even Dusseldorp's own team-mates could represent a threat for his ambitions: Austrian Willi Steindl also has gathered Formula 3 experience, in 2009, and Daniel Abt, a member of the tradition-rich German Abt family, is regarded as a true talent. Following some tests, there was only one option for 17-year old Willi Steindl. "For me, there was no alternative to securing a Van Amersfoort Racing cockpit," he reveals. "This team is working so professional that I see good chances of battling it out at the front end of the field, this year."
For Daniel Abt who also is 17 years old and contested a first test appearance in the 2009 season finale at Oschersleben, the 2010 season opener at the same venue - held on 10th/11th April - represents his true Formula 3 debut. "From my point of view, the two races I contested last year were rather a test - and even more so as I also raced in the Formula Masters, then," says the reigning ADAC Formula Masters Champion.
On the one hand, Team Principal Frits van Amersfoort knows that he can rely on his well-balanced driver line-up but on the other, he dampens the expectations, nevertheless. "Defending the ATS Formula Cup title is anything but easy and mustn't be taken for granted. The series has improved a lot, regarding both quality and quantity. I wouldn't be surprised if several drivers would share the race wins, this year."
