High Noon in Sachsen?
Will the Sachsenring be the venue of the ATS Formula 3 Cup showdown? The battle for the title in Germany's fastest single-seater series could be over as early as after the two races held this weekend on the demanding racetrack located close to Zwickau. And the most experienced driver also has got the best chances of winning the title: Frederic Vervisch. For last year's runner-up, the title is the only thing that counts. "For me, anything but winning the title would represent a disappointment," says the 22-year old. "Therefore, I'm going to drive my heart out for realising this goal." In the 14 races contested to date, the Belgian from the small coastal town Kortrijk has scored a total of 103 points and holds a 31-point lead over his toughest rival, Sebastian Saavedra.
The young Colombian actually has achieved more than expected, in his maiden ATS Formula 3 Cup season. Nonetheless, he is far from giving up. "Why should I," Saavedra asks. "You have already seen that it's possible. There have been other rookies who won the Formula 3 title in Germany."
Saavedra's main advantage: he can opt for a fully relaxed approach. There's nothing he must prove as he already has done so. He can really go for it and even can take some risks. Vervisch's advantage: he delivered in truly dominant style, in the past four races. Four race wins talk for themselves. Saavedra's disadvantage: the 18-year old is involved in a fierce battle for the runner-up position, with his rivals, Chinoso and Cecotto, following just three and five points respectively behind. Vervisch's disadvantage: the pressure he has to cope with. Should he fail to win the title this year, he will never be able to compensate for this failure. 2008 is supposed to be his final ATS Formula 3 Cup season.
The coming event is one the ATS Formula 3 Cup drivers look forward to particularly. The established drivers as they know the Sachsenring and the rookies as they have been told what a racetrack they are going to race on, this weekend. The Sachsenring features a very special myth. With its demanding layout, its fast corner combinations and its uphill and downhill sections, it represents a truly unique challenge for every racing driver.
And once again, the ATS Formula 3 Cup aces will be the fastest drivers of the weekend. After all, there is a simple Formula: the twistier a circuit, the better for Formula 3. And the fact that the battles - not only the one for the title - will be hard fought makes the situation even more challenging.
