Maiden win in the season highlight
Christian Vietoris has done it - with perfect timing. In the season highlight at the Norisring, the former ATS Formula 3 Cup driver celebrated his maiden Formula 3 Euro Series win. The start of the Sunday round (29th June) proved to be tumultuous, with the race having to be red-flagged for quite a while due to a pile-up. Following the restart, Vietoris held second position but just a few laps later, he took the lead and defended it to cross the finish line as race winner. The Saturday round was won by Nico Hulkenberg who also gathered his first Formula 3 experiences on the ATS Formula 3 Cup grid. Christian Vietoris looks back.
Having secured your first win must feel great?
Yes indeed! I was virtually over the moon as I had to wait quite a while for this win. We had prepared really well. We had the pace in the past races but unfortunately, something went wrong every time. But now it finally worked.
Is winning at the Norisring something special?
To be honest, I was just happy as the pressure on me was increasing race by race. Quite obviously, people know me from the ATS Formula 3 Cup and expect me to deliver on a certain level.
How do you assess your season to date?
Currently, I hold 3rd position in the championship and am quite happy with this position. Nonetheless, I have to admit that I could have done even better. During the course of the season so far we didn't experience a single normal race, thus losing quite a lot of points we could have scored. At the Hockenheimring I suffered a clutch failure and in Pau, the weather wasn't on our side. We contested the qualifying session in two groups and while my group had to cope with rain, the other enjoyed the advantage of a drying track.
What are your goals for the remainder of the season?
I would be happy if I could defend my third position in the championship. Maybe I can even gain another position - closer to Nico Hulkenberg. I definitely want to secure another one or two race wins and will give my very best to shine in the Masters and Macau.
Did the ATS Formula 3 Cup represent a good preparation?
My season there definitely was extremely helpful. The difference between the cars isn't that big, therefore, adapting to the Formula 3 Euro Series proved to be anything but difficult, for me. Furthermore, I already knew the procedures of a Formula 3 race weekend, thus having the chance of relying on a certain routine. Altogether, the ATS Formula 3 Cup represented the perfect preparation.
