LAURENS VANTHOOR CELEBRATES FIRST PODIUM FINISH AT OSCHERSLEBEN!
OSCHERSLEBEN, MAY 11TH 2008 - There was no limit to Laurens Vanthoor's performances during the third and the fourth round of the 2008 ATS Formula 3 Cup in Germany this weekend. Under tropical conditions, the 17-year old Belgium driver scored his first podium finish in this series of the year at the 3,696 meter long Oschersleben track. By finishing in second the driver in Dutch duty added a welcome 8 points to his championship tally. Vanthoor also tried to take victory in the final race of the weekend, but was soon hit from behind by Tweraser. After a decent race in which he overtook many other drivers he finished in eighth place.
FREE PRACTICES + QUALIFICATIONS:
At the German circuit near Magdeburg city, the first two Free Practise sessions already started on Friday. At the technical track, Vanthoor needed some time to get to know the track at first. He was constantly at the front and finished the session in first place. In the second Free Practise however, Vanthoor had refound his speed and finished the latter session with new tyres in fifth place. In the qualifying session Vanthoor tried to set a fast lap but he, and the other drivers, were constantly slowed because of yellow flags. Finally he took the third place, but the stewards of the meeting catch his fastest laptime after the session. This because he drove his fastest lap during the yellow flags, but after studying the data we got his third place back. In the second and final session Vanthoor also went out on the track as the last car of the field. On a dry track he kept improving his lap times and put in the second fastest lap time of the session.
RACE 01 + 02:
In the first race on Saturday afternoon Vanthoor enjoyed a good start and overtook polesitter Saavedra. He took a second place behind frontrunner Gerhard Tweraser. Because Vanthoor had a big fight with Saavedra, Tweraser was able to create a gap between him and the cars behind him. Vanthoor had to defend his position against a storming Saavedra once when a back marker got into his way, but managed to do that well. In the remaining laps the Belgium driver kept his position and crossed the line as second!
The second race of the weekend took place on Saturday afternoon. Vanthoor overtook polesitter Saavedra and took the lead in the first lap. The Volkswagen driver tried to increase his gat to the other drivers in the second lap, but he was soon hit from behind by Tweraser and spun off the track. This resulted in Vanthoor dropping to the 22th and last position out on track. The Van Amersfoort Racing driver did not give up though and started a marvellous race back through the field. At the end of the eighteen-lap race he had fought his way back into eighth place.
LAURENS VANTHOOR: "With two trophies in the ATS Formula 3 Cup this weekend, I think I can go home completely satisfied! In qualifying and both races, we showed a good pace here, which I have to thank the team for that. Ofcourse, finishing second in my second weekend in the ATS Formula 3 is not bad, but I think I could win the second race. Nevertheless, the season is still long and I will prepare for the next races in the ATS Formula 3 Cup, taking place at the Nurburgring track (May 23 - 25)."
