Laurens Vanthoor scores perfect weekend in German F3-championship
OSCHERSLEBEN. Exactly eleven years after Bas Leinders' double victory in the German F3 at Oschersleben with Van Amersfoort Racing, Laurens Vanthoor has achieved precisely the same. "And that was a solid step towards clinching the title that year", the former F1 test driver laughed in the parc ferme after the race, where he whole heartedly congratulated his successor. In Oschersleben Laurens Vanthoor recorded an almost perfect performance, "I only missed the pole spot for race 1", he told us in a relaxed manner after his fifth victory of the season.
The German ATS F3 Cup, the German national F3 championship was in Oschersleben during the FIA GT-meeting, the fourth meeting of the season. Having been the fastest during the free practice sessions on Friday, Laurens Vanthoor clinched his fourth pole of the season in Oscherlsleben on Saturday. He was the fastest of the pack during the second session, having finished second during the first qualifying session.
Laurens Vanthoor: "In all honesty it was a difficult assignment. Never before have I experienced so many problems due to slower competitors and on top of that there were numerous yellow flags and there was a fair amount of dirt on the track. I wasn't able to get the most out of my tyres at their peak and missed out on pole by a hair's breadth. The second session wasn't perfect either, but my fastest lap was good enough for the pole. We still need to carry out some fine tuning on the car before the races, because I'm fully determined to grab both victories here."
Once again Van Amersfoort Racing provided some excellent work seeing Laurens Vanthoor won the first race of the weekend on Saturday evening. The RACB National Team driver led the race from start to finish in Oschersleben, taking the chequered flag with a lead of some 10" on his nearest rival.
Laurens Vanthoor: "I took a great start and immediately built up a lead. I completed several laps in a qualifying pace, after which I steadied the rhythm to save my tyres."
Race 2 was a carbon copy of race 1, with Vanthoor once again leading from start to finish. "This time around it was more difficult on a damp track, because you mustn't be taken by surprise under these conditions. You must also take care that you don't wear out your front tyres, because this is one the characteristics of this track. I'm absolutely delighted with the weekend, everyone worked truly hard and I've now extended my lead in the championship, allowing me to start driving strategically."
The following ATS F3 Cup meeting will be held on 4th and 5th July on the Lausitz Eurospeedway.
