Champion Vanthoor rounds off German F3 with victory and two records
OSCHERSLEBEN, GERMANY. This weekend Laurens Vanthoor celebrated his farewell of the German ATS F3 Cup in a proper manner. On the chilly and wet Oschersleben circuit, where the ninth and final meeting of the season was being held, he won his eleventh race of the current season whereby he equalled the record number of victories in the championship, which over the last thirty years has produced some great names in the motorsport world. For Laurens Vanthoor the German F3 ended with a title and a record. "As from today I'm working on the future, a future I will be disclosing in the days to come, but I can already reveal that Macau in November will be my next assignment", the German F3 champion commented. In the second race he started off in twelfth on the grid, finishing in an excellent second place.
During the final meeting of the German F3 in Oscherleben Laurens Vanthoor drove to pole on both Friday and Saturday. In wet and varying conditions he proved to be the fastest on both occasions, "but twice during my fastest lap apparently the yellow flag was shown, which cost me the pole on both Friday and Saturday. All rather annoying, all the more so as race control aren't always consequent in their actions, as earlier this year I lost a pole position because I was the only one who slowed down during a similar situation. But OK, we'll show them what we can do during the races ", the German F3 champion 2009 remarked. For race 1 he was slotted back into third place, and for race 2 he was relegated to 12th place.
For Laurens Vanthoor his eleventh win of the season came about on Saturday. The young RACB Team Driver won the first race of the final meeting of the 2009 season in Oschersleben bringing his season's total to eleven.
As the result of being penalised during the first qualifying session, Vanthoor did not set off from pole, but third place on the grid. Due to a heavy downpour race control decided to start the race behind the safety-car, but after one lap the pack was let loose.
Laurens Vanthoor: "I then kept an eye on the lines taken by the other competitors and after a few laps I had moved up into second place. After that it became somewhat more difficult, especially with a steamed up visor, but I got the better of Pommer. I was highly motivated, especially after the problem during qualifying and really wanted to win. On top of that with my total of 13 victories, two last year and eleven this season I'm amongst the top of the victory rankings in the German F3, together with Norberto Fontana, Jorg Muller and João Paulo Lima de Oliveira." Laurens Vanthoor was in 12th place on the grid for the start of Sunday's race, and following an excellent start he was up in fourth after several laps. "But then a slower competitor being doubled decided skilfully to make life difficult. He held me back for several laps and I lost valuable time, time which I just lacked to clinch a place on the podium and who knows even to fight it out for victory. What an improbable scenario... afterwards I clocked up the fastest lap, reduced the gap with the top-3, but it was too late", Vanthoor explained. But matters were put to right, as after the race two competitors ahead of Laurens were penalised for having overtaken under yellow flag conditions and he moved up into 2nd place. Another podium!
And so Laurens Vanthoor finished off the season on a high, having already convincingly clinched the title earlier, and also equalled the record number of victories and set up a new record with his 14 pole positions.
"Before concentrating on the future I wish to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped me make this season possible. In the first place my father, but also Van Amersfoort Racing, my partners, VW Motorsport and the RACB", ends Laurens Vanthoor
Laurens Vanthoor is now preparing for the Macau Grand Prix F3, on 21st and 22nd November, and more news on this event will follow in due course.
