Vervisch takes phenomenal victory in Hockenheim
This weekend, Frederic Vervisch came a step closer to the title in the German Formula 3 Championship after a victory and a fourth place on the Hockenheimring.
To win a race, one doesn't need to start one pole position. This was proven by Frederic Vervisch not only during the last months, in which he won a couple of race without having started in pole, but also at Hockenheim where on June 14th and 15th, the seventh and eight round of the season were held.
During the qualifying sessions, which were interrupted by a lot of incidents and crashes, Frederic set the third and fourth time. "Comparing to the season opener two months ago, this is a serious improvement", he said after the second session. "The gaps are also very small, so we must be able to get some good results."
While he finished the first race in fourth place, Vervisch took a phenomenal victory in the second race of the weekend.
The race director decided to have the race started behind Safety Car as the heavy rainfall deteriorated the driving conditions. At the end of the first lap, all the drivers came in for rain tyres. Thanks to a fast tyre change by the Swiss Racing Team mechanics, Fred was able to gain a position.
On the wet track, Frederic was the fastest of the lot. Johnny Cecotto and Kevin Mirocha had to let the Belgian get by. But after a spin, Fred fell back behind Mirocha, who eventually wasn't able to hold off Frederic. In the penultimate lap, Vervisch overtook Mirocha in the Sachs turn and increased his lead by almost four seconds in the last lap!
Frederic Vervisch: "Fantastic. It was an exciting race in treacherous conditions. I had to cope with a lot of aquaplaning, but was able to keep my car on the road. Only one time I lost control of the car and spun, but was able to regain the lead in the penultimate lap and win the race. It was a well-earned victory in which everyone at SRT has his share."
With the fifteen points Frederic scored this weekend, he was the best performing driver. Not only is he reducing the gap to leader Matteo Chinosi to only four points. He also increased his advantage over Saavedra to ten points.
Drivers and teams can now enjoy a break of a month and a half before the next races. These take place on the TT Assen on August 2nd and 3rd.
