The Cup goes rollercoaster
There arguably isn't a Formula 1 driver who doesn't love Spa. The spectacular circuit located close to the Belgian Ardennes village Francorchamps has got a very special appeal. And it goes without saying that young racing drivers also are fascinated by the tradition-rich challenging circuit. Now, a dream comes true for the drivers on the 2011 ATS Formula 3 Cup grid: the Ardennes rollercoaster represents the latest asset to this year's calendar!
From 05th to 07th May, the ATS Formula 3 Cup will be racing at Spa-Francorchamps. The seven-kilometre GP circuit located in the border triangle will stage the third and fourth rounds of the ATS Formula 3 Cup season within the framework of the prestigious 1000-Kilometre Race. And the drivers of the fastest German single-seater series are particularly looking forward to the notorious Eau Rouge. Here, the circuit features a steep uphill section and the drivers seem to drive up into the sky. To go really fast, here, you have to be truly courageous. "Spa-Francorchamps represents a first major highlight in the opening stages of the season," says Bertram Schafer, the organiser of the ATS Formula 3 Cup. "The circuit is unique worldwide - and therefore particularly popular with fans and drivers. It differs massively from the retort circuits we are used to racing on today. Here, the wheat is quickly separated from the chaff."
With Spa-Francorchamps' Grand Prix circuit, the Circuit Zolder and the Red Bull Ring, the 2011 ATS Formula 3 Cup calendar features three new race venues. Furthermore, the series will be integrated into three different event concepts. While the majority of the races will be held within the framework of the ADAC Masters Weekends, the series will use the 1000-Kilometre Race platform at Spa - and at Assen, it will race in the support programme of the Superleague Formula.
The ATS Formula 3 Cup season comprising a total of nine two-race events will be kicked off in April and end in October. The calendar features race weekends in Germany (Oschersleben, Sachsenring, EuroSpeedway Lausitz, Hockenheim), the Netherlands (Assen), Belgium (Spa-Francorchamps, Zolder) and in Austria (Red Bull Ring).
