New to the Cup: ArtTech chassis

(03.03.2009) When it comes to variety, the forthcoming ATS Formula 3 Cup season ties in with the year 2008: drivers from 11 countries have been entered as early as now and the new season even will witness the debut of a new chassis: Team Stromos ArtLine Racing is going to contest the ATS Formula 3 trophy with two ArtTech F24 Opel single-seaters. And in the engine area, the grid also will feature four power units at least: Mercedes, OPC-Challenge, Opel and Volkswagen

ArtLine Racing come with a special feature: they are planning, designing and enhancing their single-seaters themselves, thus being the only Russian team racing with an in-house designed Formula car. Team owner and manager Shota Abkhazava has got a lot of engineering and design experience under his belt. Sergei Piskunov is the head of the Art-Line engineering design team and represents a well-known constant in the Russian motor-racing world. The design office is equipped with the most sophisticated computers, allowing the squad to calculate all the parameters of the car, such as the aerodynamics, to predict its on-track performance.

Team ArtLine Racing was founded in 1998 and from 1999 to 2004, it competed in different Russian series with Dallara chassis'. The squad used these years to gather experiences with the complex Formula 3 single-seaters. And in 2004, the first single-seater designed and built in Russia, the ArtTech F1605, was subjected to its first tests. The car was designed for the Formula 1600 - but according to Formula 3 standards.

The enhancement of the car even slightly resembles what usually is witnessed in Formula 1: the numerous innovations are based on race results, tests and wind-tunnel work. The next step was the F1605M. And in mid-2007, the F1607 was launched.

In 1999, ArtLine Racing contested its maiden race in the Russian Formula 3 Championship and finished third in the championship right away. In 2001, the squad celebrated its first title. Another two years later, the team entered the Formula 1600 to secure three race wins, in its debut season. In September 2007, following appearances on the grid of different Russian series, the team opted for contesting the 2008 Finnish Formula 3 Championship

Now, Stromos ArtLine Racing is looking for a new challenge: the ATS Formula 3 Cup. And it is going to meet this challenge together with the two Russian drivers Victor Shaitar and Ivan Samarin who already have been racing for the squad in the past years. Nonetheless, Team Manager Shota Abkhazava explains that the expectations shouldn't be set too high. "After all, the fastest German single-seater series represents true virgin soil, for us," he underlines. "Everybody will have to cope with a lot of new tasks: the team, the engineers and the drivers, too. We know neither the environment nor the circuits but I'm convinced that we have what it takes to get along."
