DOUBLE PODIUM FOR CARLO VAN DAM AT THE NÜRBURGRING!
NÜRBURG, 09 JUNE 2007 - Carlo van Dam did himself a huge favor at the German Nürburgring by finishing second and third at round four of the ATS Formula 3 Cup. The championship leader set the fastest lap during race one and took pole position for the second race. In the title race Van Dam increased his leading position with 68 points after eight races. He now also heads the Rookie Cup with 65 points.
FREE PRACTICE SESSIONS + QUALIFYING:
For the second time this month the Nürburgring hosted an ATS Formula 3 Cup event. Van Dam keeps great memories to the last time he visited the German circuit after scoring a win, two poles, and setting a fastest lap. Two practice sessions were held on Friday. Van Dam explored the 3,618 meter long track and set the third best time. During the final half hour practice session Van Dam had some minor technical problems which left him in the pit for the main part of the session. In qualifying it was looking good. After several warm-up laps Van Dam started his flying lap. This lap it seemed like everything fell in place until he had to avoid another competitor. The S-T-A-R-T-driver had to settle in third place. Christian Vietoris took pole followed by Récardo Bruins Choi. Vietoris' time was scrapped as he had passed under yellow. Van Dam promoted to second place in the process. Just before the race the stewards of the meeting reversed the decision made earlier and Van Dam was back in third place as Vietoris started from pole again. A strange decision which helped the German back in the saddle. During the second qualifying session Van Dam went out verly late and in lap seven he took pole in a very fast 1:21.455!
RACE 01 + 02:
During the race Van Dam made a great start and could follow pole sitter Vietoris and Récardo Bruins Choi. During the second lap Vietoris ran wide leaving the door open for Bruins Choi and Van Dam. In second place Van Dam tried to pass Bruins Choi but the South Korean kept the door shut. The 21-year old Van Dam finished second after 18 laps and also took the championship point for the fastest lap. His main rivals for the championship Nico Verdonck, Frédéric Vervisch and Christian Vietoris finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively. On Sunday afternoon Van Dam did not start as well as the first race and was passed by Vietoris and Bruins Choi before the first corner. Van Dam fell back behind Bruins Choi and followed the two home in third place. It marked his seventh podium visit of the season.
CARLO VAN DAM: "I am happy with the points but I should have won the second race. This short track is not my favorite sort and not everything completely fell in place. Despite all I have scored another sixteen points and increased my championship lead. Ik hope to be able to go for a win again at the Eurospeedway at the Lausitzring (03-05 August)."
