SALVADOR DURAN WANTS A SECOND WIN IN THE WORLD SERIES AT SPA
OXFORD, U.K. (August 15, 2007) - The 6.973-Km. circuit at Spa-Francorchamps will host this weekend the World Series by Renault 3.5. This championship has had seven different winners this season and Telmex-backed driver Salvador Duran hopes to become the first driver to win for the second time in the series this year.
"The series is very competitive. In all those races there was not a driver who repeated a victory. We have already won and I would like very much to become the first one to repeat. I am looking forward to achieve that at Spa," the Mexican said.
The winners in this season have been: Mikhail Aleshin (Carlin Motorsport) and Salvador Duran (Telmex/Interwetten.com) at Monza; Sebastian Vettel (Carlin Motorsport) and Davide Valsecchi (Epsilon Euskadi) at the Nurburgring; Alvaro Parente (Tech 1 Racing) in Monaco; and Filipe Albuquerque (Epsilon Euskadi) and Alejandro Nuñez (Red Devil Comtec) at the Hungaroring.
Questioned about the historic track located in the Belgian Ardennes, Duran said: "Now comes a very hard weekend at Spa. It is a very important track in the racing world, which I like very much. It is a legendary, technical, fast and complicated circuit."
And he added: "The sponsors had given me all the support and I am grateful to them. The team has worked very hard to get there well-prepared. I've been working physically and mentally a lot for the moment to compete there. So, I hope to get Spa in good shape. I am confident that I can do well. In fact, I am looking forward to work and get back to the front. Because the race results that we got at the Hungaroring did not reflected what we are really capable to do."
On the other hand, Sebastian Vettel (74 points), who is the current leader in the point standings, is out of contention after emigrating to Formula One. With Vettel out and 30 entries in one of the most competitive series in the world, the show promises to be exciting.
Additionally, the fight for the championship is hot. Alvaro Parente and Filipe Albuquerque with 51 and 49 points, respectively, lead the standings along with Vettel. However, Ben Hanley (45), Milos Pavlovic (41), Mikhail Aleshin (29), Giedo van der Garde (24), Marco Bonanomi (22) and Alvaro Barba (22) are still contenders to the title, and Salvador Duran (25) -currently seventh in the championship, also is one of the favourites to grab the crown.
The activities at Spa-Francorchamps will commence this Thursday, August 16 with a collective test which is scheduled to start at two in the afternoon. The following day there is a qualifying session at 16:20 hrs. with 45 minutes per group. On Saturday the first race will be held at 15:55 hrs. (45 minutes or 20 laps), with a pit stop window between laps 5-12. The second race will be held at 10:40 hrs. also with 20 laps or 45 minutes. All are local times.
